The experience
The tour starts at the Golden Temple, where your guide walks you through the 500-year-old complex and explains the history of the Sikh holy site. You'll visit the world's largest community kitchen on the temple grounds (a working langar that feeds thousands daily), and see the healing tree, a 500-year-old banyan where visitors come from around the world to bathe in the pool beneath it. The guide explains the spiritual and historical significance of each space as you move through the campus.
From there, you move to Jallianwala Bagh, the massacre garden where British troops killed hundreds of unarmed protesters in 1919. Walking the grounds, you'll see the bullet marks still embedded in the walls and the martyrs' well at the center: a physical record of the violence that shaped India's independence movement. The Partition Museum follows, documenting the 1947 division of India and Pakistan through photographs, personal accounts, and artifacts. This museum is closed Mondays, so plan accordingly if that's your travel day.
You'll also visit Durgiana Temple, a Hindu shrine with its own architectural and spiritual history. Throughout the tour, you travel in a private air-conditioned car with a professional guide who speaks English. Bottled water is provided to keep you hydrated. The whole experience runs four to five hours. Wear comfortable walking shoes and clothes that cover your arms and legs, as some religious sites require it. In winter, bring a jacket and gloves.
