The Experience

The tour begins at the Partition Museum in Amritsar's Town Hall, where the guide walks you through the 1947 partition of India and Pakistan that displaced 18 million people. From there you move through the old heritage streets, stopping at the Saragarhi Memorial Gurudwara to learn about 21 Sikh soldiers who died serving in the British Army. Between stops, you can tie a turban to experience local dress, and the guide shares stories about how people lived in the city's older quarters.

Jallianwala Bagh comes next—the memorial to the massacre of April 13, 1919, which happened on the eve of Baisakhi. Then you reach the Golden Temple, Sri Harmandir Sahib, the spiritual center of Sikhism. The guide explains Sikh history and religion, walks you through the temple's architecture, and takes you to the langar hall where thousands of people eat free meals every day. The Sikh Central Museum is also part of the stop.

After lunch on the way, you drive about two hours to the Wagah Border, 30km from the city. The evening ceremonial parade is a 30-minute display of military showmanship—soldiers from both sides compete in hooting, dancing and cheering on musical beats while thousands of Indians fill the stadium. The energy is high and the patriotic display is visible from both sides of the border.
