The Experience
I didn’t really know what to expect when we set off from the old Town Hall for this Amritsar heritage walking tour. The air was thick with that early morning mix of incense and fried dough — someone nearby was already making jalebis, I think. Our guide, Jaspreet, greeted us with a grin and a joke about my shoes (apparently, “city shoes” don’t last long here). We started at the Partition Museum. I’ll admit, it hit harder than I thought — hearing voices from 1947 echo through those rooms, looking at battered suitcases and faded photos. It felt like the city itself was still carrying those memories around.
We wandered toward Saragarhi Memorial Gurudwara next. Jaspreet told us about the Sikh soldiers who fought there — twenty-one against thousands. He said their story is still told in every Punjabi household. The street noise faded for a second as we stepped inside; just the sound of our footsteps on cool marble and the faint hum of prayers somewhere behind a curtain. Then back out into sunlight, dodging scooters and kids in school uniforms who giggled at my attempts to say “Sat Sri Akal.”
The walk through old Amritsar is honestly hard to describe without sounding dramatic — narrow lanes twisting past goldsmiths’ workshops where you can hear tiny hammers tapping out jewelry patterns from another century. At Jallianwala Bagh, Jaspreet paused longer than usual before telling us about that day in 1919. There’s a silence there that doesn’t feel forced; even the birds seem quieter. Later we ducked into an ancient temple covered in faded frescoes — colors peeling but somehow more beautiful for it. Someone handed me a bit of prasad sweet as we left; I still remember the taste mixed with dust and sandalwood.
By the time we reached Baba Bohar — this huge banyan tree tangled up right in the city’s heart — I’d stopped checking my phone or thinking about what came next. There’s something about walking these streets with someone who knows every shortcut and story that makes you feel less like a tourist and more like you’re borrowing someone else’s hometown for an afternoon.
