The experience
The tour opens at the Golden Temple, Sikhism's holiest shrine, where you get backstage entry to the langar: the world's largest free community kitchen that feeds around 50,000 people daily. You'll walk through the temple premises to understand the history and significance of Sikh practice, then see the Akal Takth Sahib, the sacred building that houses the holy book. The guide shares photos throughout the day and explains what you're seeing as you move through each space.
After the temple, the route takes you to Jallianwala Bagh, a walled garden and memorial to the 1919 massacre of Indians under British rule. You'll see the wall still marked with bullet holes and the well into which hundreds jumped to escape gunfire. The Partition Museum follows (the world's first museum dedicated entirely to the stories and trauma of partition) preserving firsthand accounts and artifacts from millions displaced during India's division. On the drive between sites, you pass Khalsa College, a living example of Sikh architecture in the city.
The final leg is a 35 km drive to the Wagah Border, where you stand 250 meters from the India-Pakistan fence under Indian Border Security Force supervision and watch the daily beating retreat ceremony. The same location holds Pul Kanjari, a 200-year-old monument with its own history. The tour wraps around this sequence, ending at the border after the ceremony concludes.
