The experience

The day starts at your hotel, where your guide meets you for the drive to the Golden Temple. The Harmandir Sahib sits in the Amrit Sarovar, a sacred pool excavated in 1577, ringed by a marble walkway and believed to wash away pain and grant health. You'll walk the grounds and watch rows of pilgrims collect trays and cutlery at the langar, the temple's community kitchen where hundreds eat together each day. The scale of it has to be seen to be believed.

From there you head to Jallianwala Bagh, the site of an infamous massacre that shaped India's independence movement. Your guide provides the history as you move through the grounds. The final stop is the Wagah Border, where you watch the Beating Retreat Ceremony unfold: Indian and Pakistani Rangers march toward the gates from their respective sides, salute each other, lower their flags in unison, and return to the border line for a final handshake. The bugle blow marks the end. After the ceremony, your driver takes you back to your hotel.
