You walk Buda Castle's hilltop district with a local guide for two hours, seeing Matthias Church, Fisherman's Bastion, and the Sándor Palace, then move to Parliament for a 45-minute audioguided interior visit through neo-Gothic halls. Hotel pickup is at 11am, security check takes 20 minutes, and printed tickets are required at the entrance.
"You see those small streets? They survived everything — earthquakes, fires, wars," your guide will tell you as you step onto Castle Hill at 11am from the Hilton hotel reception. That's the rhythm of this tour: walking through Buda's narrow squares while someone who knows the place tells you why it still stands. The Fisherman's Bastion opens up first, and the view hits you — the Danube below, the Chain Bridge, Parliament across the water. Matthias Church sits beside it with its roof decorated like a jeweled box, a 19th-century Neogothic fantasy that somehow feels older. You'll see the Sándor Palace, official residence of Hungary's president since 2003, and the Matthias Fountain, which locals call the Trevi Fountain of Budapest.
The second half shifts to Parliament. After the castle walk, you move down to the building itself — one of Europe's most elaborate government buildings, all spires and stone lace. The interior visit runs 45 minutes with an audioguide (not a private guide at this stage, so you move through the halls at your own pace), and you learn the neo-Gothic details as you go. The building's history is layered: rebuilt, extended, burned down, rebuilt again. You'll also pass the Shoes on the Danube Bank, 60 pairs of iron shoes marking where Jews were shot into the river in 1944–45. It's a quiet stop, close to Parliament, and it grounds the tour in something harder than architecture.
Arrive 20 minutes early for the security check — printed tickets are required at the entrance. Note that if Parliament is in session or hosting official events, the tour can be postponed or cancelled, so check before you book. The whole experience is built around the 11am start time, which means you're done by early afternoon and the light on the castle is still good for photos.
