The Experience

The first thing I noticed stepping into the Castle District was the odd quiet — just footsteps echoing off old stone, and that faint, sweet smell from a bakery somewhere down Tárnok Street. Our guide, Ádám, waved us over by the Royal Palace’s battered walls and started talking about how it’s been built up and torn down so many times, you can actually see the scars in the brickwork if you look close. I leaned in to touch one of those stones (probably not allowed), cold and rough under my fingers. Ádám caught me and just grinned — “Everyone does it.”

I didn’t expect to care about medieval merchant houses but somehow, walking along Tárnok Street, I did. There’s something about seeing those thick wooden doors still holding on after centuries — makes you wonder who else has stood here worrying about their day. We ducked into a courtyard where laundry fluttered above us (someone actually lives here!) and Ádám explained how traders would store spices and cloth behind these Gothic facades. The air was damp and smelled faintly of old books or maybe wet stone; hard to tell. I tried to imagine horses clopping past or merchants arguing prices in Hungarian or German — probably both.

We wandered past Saint Mary Magdalene’s lone tower — honestly, it looks a bit lost without its church. Ádám told us how it survived wars, then nearly got bulldozed in the 1950s except for some stubborn archaeologists who refused to let go. He paused there for a second, looking up at the sky like he was remembering something personal. That stuck with me more than any photo could.

By the time we reached Matthias Church and Fisherman’s Bastion (the main keyword is Buda Castle tour, right?), there were more people around but still plenty of space to breathe. We didn’t go up to the upper terrace — apparently that’s extra — but standing at street level with King Stephen’s statue looming above felt just right anyway. Someone nearby tried to pronounce “Halászbástya” and got it so wrong that even our guide laughed out loud. The sun came out for a minute, lighting up all those pale stones; I still think about that view sometimes when things get noisy back home.
