The experience

The tour starts with a private guide walking you through the castle district, a UNESCO World Heritage site that has survived earthquakes, fires, sieges and war. You'll see Buda Castle itself (rebuilt and extended many times, with its current look completed after World War II), then move through the small streets and quiet squares where your guide shares the stories of people who lived here. Matthias Church, with its ornate Neogothic roof and decorated interior, is the highlight. You enter with your guide for an indoor tour. Along the way you pass the Sándor Palace, the official residence of Hungary's president, and reach Fisherman's Bastion for one of Budapest's most famous panoramic views across the Danube, Margaret Island, Pest and Gellért Hill.

After the walking portion, you board a Danube River cruise. This part is shared with other passengers, not private. The boat runs recorded commentary in 30 languages, so you can follow along at your own pace. You'll cruise under the Chain Bridge, one of Budapest's most photographed landmarks, and see the Hungarian Parliament Building from the water. A drink is included: choose from Champagne, wine, beer, soda or mineral water. The daytime cruise departs at 2pm. If you pick the evening option, it leaves at 9pm. Both give you time to photograph the city's landmarks from the river and take in the views from the water.

Hotel pickup is included, and the guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French and two additional languages. The whole experience runs four hours. Infants and small children can travel in a pram or stroller, and specialized infant seats are available if needed. You can also use public transportation to reach the starting point if you prefer.
