The Experience
I’d always heard Szentendre was “the artists’ village,” but I didn’t expect to feel so at ease there. The train ride from Budapest was quick—maybe 40 minutes?—but it felt like stepping into a different rhythm. Our guide, Ági, met us at the station with this easy smile and pointed out the old Orthodox church up on the hill. She said the bells sometimes ring at odd hours; I liked that detail for some reason.
The streets are all uneven cobblestones and pastel houses with shutters thrown open. It smelled like sweet pastry near the main square—someone frying lángos, which we tried later (messy, salty, perfect). Ági led us through these tiny alleys where painters set up easels right on the pavement. One guy nodded as we passed; he had paint smudges on his hands and didn’t seem to mind tourists peeking over his shoulder. There’s a kind of hush along the Danube embankment except for kids chasing pigeons and some accordion music drifting from a café doorway.
I lost track of time poking through little shops—ceramics, honey, old postcards—and almost forgot to meet back up with our group. It was warm but not hot; you could smell river water and grilled sausage in the air. Lunch wasn’t included but Ági gave good tips for street food stalls (I still think about that cherry strudel). The whole day trip to Szentendre from Budapest felt unhurried, like nobody was trying too hard to impress anyone. That’s rare.
