The Experience

The first thing I remember is the smell—coffee and something sweet drifting out of a bakery as we wandered into the Jewish Quarter. Anna, my host, waved at someone behind the counter and told me she grew up just two streets over. She pointed out murals I’d have missed on my own—one had this faded blue that almost matched the sky. We ducked into a tiny shop where the owner handed us slices of flódni (I definitely pronounced it wrong; Anna laughed and tried to teach me), and it was sticky and rich and honestly way better than anything I’d expected from “just” a pastry.

We crossed Andrássy Avenue next—so many old mansions with lion heads over the doors, and Anna kept stopping to share little stories about who used to live there or how ruin bars started popping up in hidden courtyards. There’s something about walking with someone who actually lives here; people greeted her by name and she always seemed to know which café would be quiet or where to find the best view. The Fisherman’s Bastion was busier than I thought it’d be, but somehow we found a spot on the wall where you could see all of Pest across the river—sunlight bouncing off Parliament’s dome. I didn’t expect to feel so… small? But in a good way.

Later we strolled along the Danube River, just talking about what life’s really like in Budapest now. The water looked silver in the late afternoon light, and there were these bursts of laughter from teenagers on bikes nearby. Our day felt less like a tour and more like tagging along with an old friend who wanted me to see her city through her eyes. At some point I forgot to check my phone for hours—which almost never happens—and I still think about that view from Buda Castle when things get noisy back home.
