The Experience

I’ll admit, I was nervous about the Segway at first—my balance isn’t exactly Olympic level. But our guide, Zoltán, had us laughing through the training just off Andrássy Avenue (I nearly ran into a flower pot—he said it happens). Once we got moving, something clicked. The city felt different from this angle—closer somehow, but also lighter. You catch little things: the smell of sweet pastry drifting out of a side street bakery near the Opera House, or how everyone seems to walk with purpose here, even when they’re just strolling.

We zipped over the Chain Bridge with the Danube glinting below and stopped at Clark Ádám Square for a quick photo—Zoltán pointed out the Zero Kilometer Stone but joked that “all roads lead to lángos anyway.” He told stories about Buda Castle that made it feel less like a postcard and more like someone’s old family home (he swears his grandmother once danced there during a festival). At Fisherman’s Bastion, you get that wide-open view over Parliament and rooftops—honestly, I didn’t expect to feel so small and so lucky at the same time.

Margaret Island was quieter than I thought it’d be; birds everywhere and this hush under the trees. My hands were cold on the Segway handles but I didn’t want gloves—wanted to feel everything. The Japanese Garden surprised me—a little pond tucked away where locals sat reading or just watching ducks. We rolled past Heroes’ Square and into City Park where kids chased each other around statues. Somewhere near Vajdahunyad Castle, Zoltán asked if we wanted to try saying its name in Hungarian—I completely butchered it, which got him laughing again.

The House of Terror Museum stop hit different; not everyone talked much after that one. It’s strange how quickly you can go from sunlight and laughter to standing quietly by those walls. But then you’re back in motion—past St. Stephen’s Basilica, along Liberty Square—and Budapest feels layered: beauty right next to memory. By the end I was tired in that good way where your cheeks hurt from smiling more than your legs do from standing.

There’s also plenty of time for photos at each highlight before rolling onward together across Buda & Pest.
