The experience

The tour starts with practice time on the Segway before you leave: enough to get comfortable balancing and steering before the route begins. Once you're ready, the guide leads you across Elisabeth Bridge, the suspension bridge that joined Buda and Pest in 1964, and up into the Buda side's historic core. You pass through Clark Adam Square, named after the British architect who designed the Chain Bridge, and ride to Fisherman's Bastion, a colonnaded structure on a hill where you stop for 15 to 20 minutes to take in the river views and visit Ruszwurm Bakery, the oldest bakery in Budapest at 196 years old.

From there you head to Matthias Church, a 13th-century building where King Matthias was married, and then cross to Margaret Island to see the dancing fountain: a UNESCO-protected musical and water show. The route continues past Parliament, one of the world's three largest parliament buildings, and takes you through Liberty Square and past St. Stephen's Basilica, the biggest church in the city. Along the way the guide points out Andrássy Avenue, the city's first main street, and the Shoes on the Danube Bank, a Holocaust memorial on the riverbank. The whole loop covers the landmarks that define Budapest's layout without the fatigue of walking the same distance.

The guide speaks English, Arabic, Russian or Hungarian and travels with the group the entire time. You wear a helmet throughout, and the tour includes video and photo recording so you leave with images from the ride. Entry to individual attractions: the Buda Castle building, Matthias Church, Parliament and St. Stephen's Basilica: costs extra and is optional. You can view them from outside or skip them and stay on the Segway.
