The Experience

I didn’t expect the air to feel so heavy up in the Castle District at night — it’s almost like the old stones are holding their breath. The first story started before we’d even taken ten steps. Something about King Matthias and a hunting scene, but honestly, I got distracted by the way the bells echoed off the cobblestones. It’s different hearing these bloodthirsty tales right where they happened.

We wandered along those narrow streets, past Buda Castle and toward Fisherman’s Bastion. Our guide stopped us at this spot where you could see Parliament glowing across the river — he lowered his voice and told us about a countess who… well, let’s just say I still get goosebumps thinking about it. There was this weird mix of laughter and shivers in our little group whenever he’d slip into another role. At one point, a local woman walked by with her dog and gave us a knowing smile — maybe she’s heard all these stories before or maybe she was just amused by tourists jumping at shadows.

The wind picked up near the statue of that ancient Hungarian bird (Turul? I probably butchered that), and for a second everything felt quiet except for distant traffic from Pest.
