The experience

The island's best coastline doesn't have a road. You can see Kleftiko from town, white rocks rising from the water like a fortress, but getting there means leaving the car behind and boarding a catamaran that leaves the bay each morning. The boat passes the fishing villages first (Skinopi, Klima, Areti), where the old boathouses called Sirmata sit painted in faded blues and yellows right at the waterline, then opens into open water toward Cape Vani and the first swim stop at Kalogries, where the water is so clear you can see the bottom from the deck.

Sikia cave comes next, a limestone hollow with a hole punched through its roof, then the two-hour anchor at Kleftiko itself. The crew knows which caves are safe to swim into, which rock formations hide the best snorkeling, and they'll point you toward the underwater colors (reds, purples, yellows in the stone) that don't show from above. Lunch happens on board after you climb back up the ladder, cooked by the crew and served with wine and water, nothing fancy but real. After that the catamaran moves on to Gerakas with its hot spring running into the sea, then Firlingos with its rust-colored sand, then the abandoned sulphur mines where the rocks are sulfur-yellow and smell like it.

The last stop is Galazia Nera in Poliegos, a lagoon formed by geological accident. The water there is so blue it doesn't look real, and it's the deepest blue on the whole island. The whole day runs about eight hours, and the route shifts depending on what the skipper decides and what the weather allows, so no two trips are identical. You're in the water maybe four hours total, snorkeling gear included, and you see more of Milos' coastline than most people who live there ever do.
