The experience

The boat leaves in the morning and works its way around Milos, passing the colorful fishing villages of Skinopi, Klima, Areti and Fourkovouni before reaching the lunar landscape of Sarakiniko. You'll see the Glaronisia (three small volcanic islands formed by ancient lava eruptions), and then cross to the uninhabited island of Polyaigos, where the water is so clear and still it looks like a natural swimming pool. The guide narrates the island's history as you pass the abandoned sulphur mines and the old manganese mines at Cape Vani, so the geology and the human story of the place come together as you move through it.

Kleftiko is the centerpiece: an old pirate hideout with white rock formations and sea caves you can snorkel directly into. You'll also swim at Gerakas, an inaccessible sandy beach with emerald water, and pass the southern beaches of Tsigrado, Fyriplaka and Provatas. The Sykia cave, with its collapsed roof, is another stop for photos and the volcanic landscape around it.
