The experience
The tour starts inside Veuve Clicquot's cellars, carved into 2000-year-old Roman chalk mines that became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2015. Your guide walks you through the historic tunnels and explains how Barbe-Nicole Clicquot, the widow who built the house into a global brand in the early 1800s, pioneered innovations that defined modern champagne production. You taste their wines and browse the boutique before moving on.
Next is Notre-Dame of Reims, the 13th-century cathedral where Clovis, the first king of France, was baptized in 496. An event that made the site the coronation church for French royalty for centuries. A certified French national monument guide leads you through the Gothic architecture, pointing out thousands of intricate stone sculptures and stained-glass windows. From there, a drive through Reims itself shows you the city's Roman arch, Art Déco squares rebuilt after World War I, and the headquarters of other major champagne houses like Krug, Taittinger and Mümm.
After lunch (your guide suggests restaurants where you can pair champagne with local food), you head into the countryside to see villages surrounded by vineyards, then visit a small champagne producer. There you learn how champagne is actually made, see their cellar and equipment, and taste three glasses from their range. The whole day runs eight hours with air-conditioned transportation included throughout.
