The experience

Épernay's Avenue de Champagne lines up the grand houses (Moët & Chandon, Perrier-Jouët, Pol Roger, Mercier, De Castellane) one after another, and this tour opens by driving through them before entering Moët & Chandon itself. The inhouse guide walks you through the historic cellars, a UNESCO Heritage Site, and tells the story of Claude Moët, who started producing champagne in 1743, and his grandson Jean-Rémi, who built the brand into one of the world's most recognized names. You taste two glasses of their champagne and visit the boutique before breaking for lunch at Épernay, where the guide suggests restaurants that pair food with wine.

The morning includes a stop in Hautvillers, the charming village perched above the Marne River Valley where Dom Pérignon lived and died as a steward of the local monastery. You visit his tomb in the church and walk through the village to spot the medieval signs adorning the houses: Hautvillers is itself a UNESCO site. The views over the vineyards and river frame the whole valley from above.

The day ends at a small champagne producer in one of the surrounding villages, where you see the machines, cellars and production process before tasting three glasses. Your guide is a certified sommelier student with seven years of experience in Champagne, and the tour runs 8 hours in a private, air-conditioned vehicle with bottled water provided throughout.
