The experience
Reims sits at the heart of Champagne, and this tour builds around the cellars that define it. You start at Pommery, the 6th largest Champagne house, where a cellar tour takes you down into 2,000-year-old Roman chalk mines now lined with bottles aging in the cool dark. The mines themselves are a UNESCO site, and the domain above them was built by Jeanne Pommery, a widow who turned the house into an empire by following the model of Veuve Clicquot. You'll taste two glasses surrounded by the bottles and modern art installations that fill the cellars.
From there, the guide leads you through Notre-Dame of Reims, a 13th-century Gothic cathedral where more than 30 French kings were crowned. The intricate sculptures and stained-glass windows frame the history: Clovis, the first king of France, was baptized on this site in 496. Then you drive the Avenue de Champagne in Épernay, where the largest houses line the street one after another: Moët & Chandon, Perrier-Jouët, Pol Roger, Mercier and others. You also pass through Reims itself to see the Roman arch, the Art Déco squares rebuilt after World War I, and the headquarters of Roëderer, Krug, Mümm, Veuve Clicquot and Taittinger.
Hautvillers, the village where Dom Pérignon lived and died, sits on a hillside overlooking the Marne River Valley and the vineyards below. You visit his tomb in the church, walk through the medieval streets of this UNESCO site, and take in the view that shaped Champagne's story. After a lunch break at Épernay, the guide suggests restaurants, you finish at a small producer's cellar to learn how Champagne is made, from the machines to the aging process, and taste three glasses of their range. The guide is a certified sommelier with 7 years in the region and speaks English, Spanish or French.
