The experience
The tour starts with a pickup from your Paris hotel and a drive to Reims in a private Mercedes. Your first stop is one of the five major champagne houses, which one depends on opening schedules and availability that week. You descend into the chalk cellars, learn how the wines are made, and taste several cuvées side by side so you can spot the differences between them. The scale and history of these operations, some dating back centuries, shape how champagne became what it is.
After the first house, you visit Reims Cathedral, the Gothic structure where French monarchs were crowned for over a thousand years. Your guide leads you through the building and its history. Then comes lunch at a restaurant inside the Royal Champagne hotel or at Le Jardin des Crayères. The menu is pre-ordered and included, though you pay separately for wine and drinks. The meal is three courses of French cuisine and local specialties.
The afternoon takes you to a high-level family estate in the Reims or Epernay area: a smaller, more intimate producer than the morning house. You taste their champagnes and learn how a boutique operation differs from the industrial scale you saw earlier. If time allows, the route can include a stop at Hautvillers, the village where Dom Pérignon is buried and where the méthode champenoise was developed. The Mercedes returns you to Paris by early evening.
