The experience
You're picked up and driven in a private Mercedes with a guide who doubles as your chauffeur for the day. The route moves through the Champagne region hitting the stops that matter: UNESCO-classified cellars with their own tasting, the Moët & Chandon house to walk the cellars and learn the history, Hautvillers village, and the tomb of Dom Pérignon. The famous Champagne Avenue is on the itinerary too. A restaurant meal comes at midday, ordered in advance so there's no menu haggling.
Tastings happen at both houses you visit. Which second house you see depends on what's available that day. It could be Taittinger, Ruinart, Pommery or Veuve Clicquot. Bottled water travels with you. Wine and drinks beyond the included Champagne tastings are on you. The guide speaks English or French, and the car is air-conditioned.
Eight hours is long enough to move through the stops without rushing, but it also means you're committed to the day. Infants from age one are welcome and can use specialized seats. The tour isn't recommended for pregnant travelers.
