The experience

You start by meeting the guide 15 minutes before departure, then ride a snowmobile through open wilderness for the first stretch of the evening. The guide leads you roughly 30 kilometers into the Lappish landscape, moving at a pace that lets you take in the dark sky above. If you're traveling with children aged three to twelve, they ride in a sleigh pulled by the guide instead of on a separate machine.

The ride ends at an open space where the group gathers around a campfire. Here you stay warm while the guide barbecues Finnish sausages and serves hot coffee and juice. This is where you settle in to watch for the northern lights. If the aurora doesn't appear, the guide points out shooting stars and walks you through the constellations visible from this far north. The whole experience runs three hours from start to finish.

Bring a valid driver's license if you're operating a snowmobile. Thermal clothing is provided. Children ride free of charge in the sleigh, and the guide speaks English and Finnish throughout. Solo travelers can upgrade to a single snowmobile for an additional fee if they prefer not to share.
