The experience
The tour starts with a flight from Addis Ababa to Jinka, then a 130 km drive through Keyafer, Aldubba and Dimeka to Turmi, passing through tribal markets on market days (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday). Your guide meets you at the airport and travels with you throughout. The journey crosses different altitudes with shifting topographies, and you visit a Hamar village in the late afternoon to begin your direct interaction with the people who live there.
Each day focuses on a different tribe. From Turmi, you drive 75 km south to Omo Rate to meet the Dassanech, who live by the Omo River at the Kenya border and speak Cushitic languages. You can attend the Hamar Bull Jumping Ceremony on market days, then return to Turmi for lunch. On day three, a 65 km drive west takes you to Korcho village to meet the Karo people on the Omo River shore. They are the smallest ethnic group in the valley and known for their elaborate facial and body paintings. You can have your face painted in their style. The final day includes a 50 km drive to visit the Mursi tribe, whose women wear lip plates, before returning to Jinka for your flight back to Addis Ababa.
Nech Sar National Park frames much of the region with mountains, lakes and forests, home to over 70 mammal species and endemic wildlife. The landscape itself carries the history: you'll see anthropomorphic grave markers and rock engravings dating back 5,000 years as you move between villages. Your guide speaks English or French, and the 4WD Toyota Land Cruiser handles the terrain. Accommodation is at Emerland Lodge in Turmi for two nights and Eco Omo Lodge in Jinka for one night.

You meet four tribes: the Hamar (known for the Bull Jumping Ceremony and market gatherings), the Dassanech (who live by the Omo River at the Kenya border and speak Cushitic languages), the Karo (the smallest ethnic group, famous for facial and body paintings), and the Mursi (a nomadic agro-pastoral community whose women wear lip plates). Each village visit is a genuine interaction with the people in their own settlements.
