The experience

The route starts in Addis Ababa and heads south past the Great Rift Valley to Chencha, a mountain village where the Dorze people live. You'll see how they weave their distinctive beehive-shaped thatch houses and produce kotcho, a traditional bread made from the false banana tree. You can try making it yourself. From there the tour moves to Arba Minch, a base for exploring Lake Chamo, where you'll visit the crocodile market: an area of the lake known for its large crocodile population and hippos. The journey continues through a series of tribal territories and market days, each one timed to catch different groups trading together.

The heart of the tour unfolds across stops in Turmi, Jinka and the surrounding region. You'll photograph the Hamer people in Turmi, where you might see the evangadi, their traditional night dancing. Dimeka and Key Afar markets, colorful gatherings on specific days, bring together Hamer, Benna, Karo and Tsemai traders. In Jinka, you'll visit Mago National Park to photograph the Mursi tribe, known for their lip and earlobe plates, then spend time at the South Omo Museum learning the history behind these traditions. A hike to a local Ari village shows blacksmith work and the distillation of areki, the local gin. The tour also includes a visit to the isolated Omo delta village of Omo Rate, where you'll cross the Omo River by local boat.

On the return leg, you'll stop in Konso to see the wakas, wooden statues erected for dead heroes, and the terraced agricultural landscape the Konso people have built into the hillsides. The cultural museum displays many of these statues. The final day is a full drive back to Addis Ababa, with time permitting to visit any archaeological sites you missed on the outbound journey. An optional folkloric dinner in Addis Ababa on the last evening includes several national dishes, ethnic dances and a traditional coffee ceremony.

Is this one for you?Pickup from Addis Ababa is included, so you don't need to arrange your own transport to the starting point. The shared guide and fixed itinerary mean you travel with other photographers on set days, which keeps costs down and builds a group dynamic. If you prefer to move at your own pace or travel solo, a private option would suit you better.
