The experience
Turmi is your base for the first night, a 2-hour drive south from Jinka airport through terrain where tribal markets operate on set days. The Hamer people live in remote villages around Turmi, and you'll spend the late afternoon with them: seeing how the women wear red mud masks mixed with clay and butter, and the elaborate brass coils and beaded ornaments that mark a married woman. The Hamar Bull Jumping Ceremony, a rite of passage where young men leap across cattle, runs on certain dates and is optional. The Evangadi Dancing Ceremony is another possibility if the timing aligns.
Day two takes you 65 kilometers to Karo Korcho village on the Omo River, where the Karo people are known for their intricate face and body paintings in geometric patterns. You can have your own face or body painted in their style, then drive back through Turmi (stopping at the tribal market if it's a market day: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday) before continuing 130 kilometers to Jinka. The Ari people around Jinka live in colorful markets and traditional mud houses, and you'll have time to walk through their settlement and buy handicrafts directly from local makers.
On the final day, you drive 50 kilometers to meet the Mursi people, a nomadic group living between Mago and Omo National Parks. Mursi women wear distinctive lip plates on their lower lips, a practice tied to their cultural identity. After the visit, you return to Jinka for your flight back to Addis Ababa. The entire route runs in an air-conditioned vehicle with a driver and guide, bottled water provided throughout, and lodging in either a hotel or camping setup depending on what you choose at booking.
