The experience
The tour starts with a morning flight from Addis Ababa to Arba Minch, where you'll visit Dorze village in the Gughe Mountains to see the beehive-shaped huts and watch traditional weaving and dance. A walk through Arba Minch Forest Park follows before you return to the hotel. On day two, a boat trip on Lake Chamo takes you to the crocodile market (where you can spot Africa's largest crocodiles, hippos, and bird species) before driving to Konso to explore one of nine UNESCO-listed villages known for their distinctive generation poles that mark the passage of time.
Day three centers on Kara village, home to about 3,000 people along the Omo River's eastern bank. If the timing aligns, you'll witness a traditional bull-jumping ceremony, a rite of passage for young men. If not, you'll visit a Hamer village instead. The fourth day takes you across the Omo River to a Dassanech village near the Kenyan border (bring your passport), then onward to Jinka, stopping to see the Mursi tribe, whose women are known for wearing large clay lip plates. On the final morning, you fly back to Addis Ababa for a farewell dinner.
Your guide speaks English and travels with you throughout. The Land Cruiser, fuel, all entrance fees, a boat excursion, photograph and video permits, Ethiopian coffee or tea, and unlimited bottled water are included. Accommodation comes with breakfast each morning. Lunch and dinner are your own, as are tips, alcohol, and personal expenses.
