The Experience
Karnak Temple is the larger stop: the Hypostyle Hall alone contains towering columns devoted to the god Amun-Ra, built over more than 1,500 years of construction. The Sacred Lake sits within the complex, and the Avenue of the Sphinxes once connected Karnak directly to Luxor Temple: the same route the ancient Opet Festival procession would have taken. You walk through both with your guide, who explains the religious and ceremonial significance of each structure.
Luxor Temple sits in the modern city center and holds its own collection of statues, obelisks and temple buildings from the 14th century BC onward. The two sites together give you the scale of Thebes' spiritual importance in ancient Egypt. The tour ends with a return to your hotel, and the air-conditioned vehicle means the heat of the day does not wear on you between stops.
