The Experience

I’ll never forget the way our driver greeted us outside the hotel in Luxor — he had this warm, slightly mischievous smile like he knew a secret about the city. Our guide, Hany, waved from the front seat and handed us cold water before we even got in. It was still early but already you could smell the Nile in the air, that sort of earthy sweetness mixed with dust and something green. The ride to Karnak Temple was short, maybe fifteen minutes, but I kept pressing my face to the window anyway. There’s just something about seeing those palm trees flick past with all the tuk-tuks darting around.

Karnak hit me harder than I expected. I mean, you see photos — but standing there between those columns (they’re huge; you feel tiny) is different. Hany pointed out some faded paint up near the top and joked that even after 3,000 years Egyptians still love color. We ended up sitting for a bit on a low wall while Hany chatted with another guide in Arabic (I caught maybe three words), just watching people drift by. Funny how sometimes you travel halfway across the world and what sticks is just sitting quietly somewhere old.
