The Experience
Hotel pickup starts the morning, then the drive takes you to Karnak Temple on Luxor's East Bank. Karnak is not one temple but a sprawling complex built over roughly 2,000 years—almost every pharaoh who ruled Egypt added something to it. You walk the Avenue of Sphinxes, move through the Hypostyle with its forest of columns, pass the Obelisks and shrines, and see the pylons and smaller structures that accumulated across dynasties. The Egyptologist guide narrates the reigns and the architectural choices that shaped each section, so the scale and the layering make sense as you move through it.
After Karnak, you're driven to Luxor Temple, which sits on the opposite bank and was dedicated to the Theben Triad—Amun-Ra, Mut and Khonsu. The granite statues of Ramses the Great stand at the entrance, and the guide walks you through the temple's role in the ancient festival cycle, particularly the "opet" festival that was central to Thebes. The whole outing runs about 4 hours from start to finish, and the air-conditioned vehicle and bottled water are included throughout.
Entrance tickets to Karnak and Luxor Temple are not included in the tour price and must be purchased separately at each site. The guide is there to interpret what you're seeing, not to handle logistics at the gates—you buy your tickets and move through. If you're traveling with children under 12 or with mobility concerns, the tour accommodates both: strollers and specialized infant seats are available, and all areas of both temples are wheelchair accessible.

What's the difference between Karnak and Luxor Temple, and why do I need to see both?
Karnak is a massive complex of temples built over 2,000 years by successive pharaohs, each adding structures like the Avenue of Sphinxes, the Hypostyle Hall, and obelisks. Luxor Temple is a single, more compact temple dedicated to the Theben Triad and features the famous granite statues of Ramses the Great. Together they show two different scales and purposes of ancient Egyptian religious architecture.
How much walking is involved in this tour?
The tour covers both temples over about 4 hours, so you'll be on your feet moving through courtyards, halls and open-air sections at both sites. The Hypostyle at Karnak involves walking through many columns, and Luxor Temple requires walking through its courtyards and inner chambers. Comfortable shoes and sun protection are essential.
Are entrance tickets included, or do I pay extra?
Entrance tickets are not included in the tour price. You pay separately at each temple—currently 220 Egyptian pounds for adults at Karnak and 180 pounds at Luxor Temple, with discounts available for children and students. The guide does not purchase tickets for you; you buy them at the gate before entering.
Can I bring young children or use a wheelchair on this tour?
Yes. Specialized infant seats and strollers are available, and children from age 1 are welcome. All areas and surfaces at both temples are wheelchair accessible, so the tour works for visitors with mobility needs.
What does the guide actually do during the tour?
The Egyptologist guide explains the history, architecture and religious significance of each temple as you walk through it. They narrate the different reigns and additions at Karnak, and explain Luxor Temple's role in ancient festivals and its dedication to the Theben Triad. The guide is there to interpret the sites, not to handle tickets or transport logistics.
What time does the tour start, and how is pickup arranged?
Hotel pickup is included, and the tour runs about 4 to 5 hours total. The specific pickup time depends on your hotel location and the operator's schedule; confirm the exact time when you book.
