The Experience

“You’re gonna get muddy,” our guide grinned as he handed over the helmet. He was right — I could smell the earth before we even started the engines. The ATVs rumbled under us, not exactly subtle, but honestly that’s half the fun. We followed a red-dirt trail past tangled green trees, rooster calls echoing somewhere behind us. My friend tried to dodge a puddle and failed spectacularly — we all laughed so hard I nearly missed the turnoff for the little farm stop.

I didn’t expect to actually taste cacao straight from the pod — it’s kind of slimy, sweet, nothing like chocolate yet. It felt good to just stand there in the shade for a second, hands sticky from fruit juice.

The cave was cooler than I thought — literally. You climb down these stone steps and suddenly it’s quiet except for water dripping somewhere in the dark.
