Step-by-step itinerary

Explore waterfalls and monkey area

  • Start at visitor center
  • Pick up helmets and life jackets
  • Walk through forest and see plants
  • Rest at mountain top
  • Descend waterfalls by jumping and sliding
  • Option to drink rum or mamajuana
  • Visit monkey area for 35 minutes

The experience

The day starts at the open-air visitor center where you pick up your helmet and life jacket, then walk into the thick forest past local plants and flowers. The guides lead you through walkways to the top of the waterfall system, where the real work begins: you descend through seven levels by jumping into pools, swimming across them, and sliding down natural water chutes. Each waterfall is a different height and angle, so the guides show you how to move through each one safely. If you don't swim, the guide will swim alongside you or assist you through the water.

After the waterfalls, you spend 35 minutes in the monkey area watching and interacting with the animals. Then comes an extra tour of how Dominican coffee and tobacco are grown, dried and processed. You'll see the steps and taste both at the end. The visit wraps with a choice of drinks: soda, water, rum, or mamajuana, a traditional Dominican blend made from natural ingredients. The guides sometimes hand out fresh local fruit as well.

You travel in an air-conditioned vehicle and the tour includes WiFi on board. A live guide speaks English and Spanish throughout. Children from age 2 are welcome, and the operator notes that kids can ride in a stroller to the visitor center if needed. The activity is not suitable for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnant travelers, or those with heart conditions. You'll need at least a moderate level of fitness for the climbing, jumping and swimming.
