The experience
The day splits into two halves. You start in Puerto Plata's historic core with a guide who walks you through the imposing Fort San Felipe, the Amber Museum's collection of fossilized resin, the Victorian architecture of Central Park and Umbrella Street: the row of colonial buildings with colorful parasol awnings that line the street. The guide points out the Cathedral of San Felipe Apostol, Independence Park and the photo spot at Paseo de Doña Blanca before heading out of the city.
Then comes the water part. After a hike through the rainforest canopy, you're outfitted with a helmet and life jacket and spend the afternoon at Damajagua Waterfalls, also called 27 Charcos, where you jump into pools, swim through channels and slide down seven natural limestone chutes worn smooth by water. The slides vary in height and angle. The guide shows you how to navigate each one safely and at your own pace. This is not a passive viewing: you're in the water the whole time, moving through the formations under your own power.
You finish with a typical Dominican lunch and soft drinks before the return drive to your hotel. The whole group stays small, and the bilingual guide handles both the cultural stops and the water safety. Bring a change of clothes and a towel. The operator does not provide locker or shoe rental, and photographs are your own responsibility.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Spanish.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What exactly do you do at Damajagua Waterfalls?
At Damajagua Waterfalls you hike through the rainforest, then jump into natural pools, swim between limestone formations and slide down seven smooth water chutes. You wear a helmet and life jacket for safety, and the guide shows you how to handle each slide before you go down.
How much of the tour is spent in the water versus walking around Puerto Plata?
The city tour takes up the first part of the day, covering the colonial sites and museums in Puerto Plata. The water adventure at Damajagua fills the second half, with a rainforest hike leading into the jumps and slides at the falls.
What is the Amber Museum in Puerto Plata?
The Amber Museum houses a collection of Dominican amber, fossilized tree resin, some pieces containing insects and plant material preserved for millions of years. The museum is one of the stops on the guided city portion of the tour.
Is this tour physically demanding?
The rainforest hike and water activities require at least a moderate level of physical fitness. You'll be jumping into pools, swimming and sliding down waterfalls, so comfort in water and the ability to climb in and out of pools matters. The operator does not recommend this tour for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health or pregnant travelers.
What's included in the Dominican lunch?
The tour includes an authentic Dominican lunch and soft drinks. Alcoholic beverages are not included, and you arrange and pay for any drinks beyond what is provided.
