Damajagua waterfalls and Puerto Plata tour
- Try canyoning at Damajagua River
- Toast with cuba libre
- Visit Macorix House of Rum
- Enjoy typical Dominican lunch
- Learn about cocoa and taste chocolate
- Explore colonial city and Independence Parque
- Walk around lighthouse and Saint Philip Fortress
The experience
Six to seven hours starting with canyoning in the limestone canyon carved by Damajagua River. You wear a helmet and life vest, then swim in the mountain stream, slide down natural rock slides and jump from waterfalls while the instructor supervises. The activity ends with a Cuba Libre toast before moving on to the rest of the day. Water shoes or trainers are essential for grip on the rocks. You can rent them for $2 if you don't bring your own.
After the canyon, the tour moves to Macorix House of Rum, where you taste multiple varieties of rum and sugarcane liquors to experience what Puerto Plata is known for producing. A typical Dominican lunch follows: fish or meat served with rice and beans, called "bandera dominicana" (Dominican flag), with soft drinks included. The operator arranges vegetarian or vegan alternatives if needed. You then visit a small chocolate manufacture to learn how Dominican cocoa becomes chocolate, tasting organic products made on-site and given the chance to buy.
The colonial city portion centers on Independence Parque, where the Saint Philip Cathedral stands surrounded by colorful old wooden houses. You'll photograph the famous Umbrella Street and Dona Blanca Passage, buy fresh coconut from a street vendor, and have free time for Dominican coffee or a cold beer. The tour ends with a walk around the lighthouse, amphitheater and Saint Philip Fortress along the harbor, then a stroll on the Malecon seaside boulevard past fishing boats and rocky Atlantic shores.
