The Experience

Bayahibe sits on the Caribbean side of the Dominican Republic, which means calmer water and better visibility than the Atlantic-facing resorts of Punta Cana. The boat leaves Bayahibe at around 9 am after you're fitted for your gear and given a safety briefing. Your guide speaks English, Spanish, French or German and will have chosen the three dive sites before you arrive—the St-Georges Wreck for depth, the Atlantic Princess for a shallower wreck dive, or a reef site depending on conditions and your experience level. You make two dives in the morning, then head to a beachside restaurant for an à la carte lunch where you can order what you want, not what's plated for you.

The afternoon brings the third dive. All your equipment comes with you—tanks, weights, BCD, regulator, wetsuit, mask and fins—so you show up with just your certification card. Dive computers are not provided, so bring your own if you use one. The minivan picks you up from your hotel and drops you back there, and the whole day runs nine hours. You need to be a certified diver to participate, and you must wait at least 18 hours after this dive before flying.
