Step-by-step itinerary

Aguadilla coastal sightseeing and beaches

  • Drive 1 hour 40 minutes to Guajataca Tunnel
  • Explore Guajataca Tunnel and view art
  • Drive 45 minutes to crystal clear water beach
  • Snorkel through coral reefs
  • Visit family-friendly beach with pier
  • Relax at Rompe Hola beach with nearby bars

The experience

You start with a 1 hour and 40 minute drive to the Guajataca Tunnel, a former railroad station built into the coast where art decorates the tunnel walls. The tunnel itself is an easy hike along the cliffside, and it opens onto beaches where you can swim and lounge. From there, a 45 minute drive takes you to a snorkeling beach with clear water and coral reefs. You'll need to know how to swim for this stop. The day moves at your own pace. Your guide picks the stops and timing based on weather, season and what you want to do.

Two more beaches follow: one with calm waters and a pier you can jump from, and Rompe Hola, where restaurants and bars sit close to the sand so you can grab food and a drink. Between swims, you'll visit a hillside village painted in bright colors that makes for photographs. The whole tour runs about 10 hours and includes bottled water, air-conditioned transport, fuel and parking. Tidal pools dot the coastline (Playa Sardinera, Playa Montones, Pozo de Teodoro and others), and their appearance shifts with the season and time of day, but they're always worth a stop if conditions allow.

What is the Guajataca Tunnel and why is it on this tour?

The Guajataca Tunnel is a former railroad carved into the coast that once transported sugar cane from local farms. It's an easy hike with ocean views and art on its walls, and it sits right above beaches where you can swim and relax afterward.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer for the snorkeling stop?

Yes, you need to know how to swim for the snorkeling beach with coral reefs. The other beach stops have calmer waters, including one with a pier, so there are options if you prefer not to snorkel.

How much time do we spend driving versus at the beaches?

The drive to Guajataca Tunnel takes 1 hour and 40 minutes, and the drive from there to the snorkeling beach is 45 minutes. The rest of the 10 hour day is split between the beaches, tidal pools, the tunnel hike and the village, depending on what you want to do at each stop.

What are the tidal pools like and which ones will we visit?

Natural tidal pools dot the coastline: Playa Sardinera, Playa Montones, Pozo de Teodoro, Posita Sardinera and Poza las Golondrinas are among them. Their appearance changes with the season, weather and time of day, but they're always scenic. Your guide will choose which ones to visit based on conditions.
