The Experience

The tour starts with pickup from your hotel and moves through Puerto Plata at a pace you set. Fort San Felipe, built by the Spanish in the 16th century to defend the coast from pirates, sits on a promontory overlooking the Atlantic; you'll see the original cannons, old weapons and the secret chambers inside. The fortress was later used as a prison and now displays views across the water — locals watch the sunset from the base of it most evenings. Your guide walks you through the colonial military structure and explains why it matters to the city's story.

The Dominican Amber Museum holds one of the largest collections of amber in the country, with blue, green and honey-brown pieces shaped by volcanic action over millions of years. Umbrella Street, on San Felipe street, is a newer space designed around color, local crafts, music and food — it's where you get a sense of what Puerto Plata residents actually do and eat. Luperón Park, built in honor of the general who gave the city this landmark when it was the Dominican capital, sits near the Cathedral and other colonial buildings, so the stops cluster together historically. If you want to add a rum tasting at Ron Macorix — the brand born in a sugar town 110 years ago and now based in Puerto Plata — that costs an extra US$5 per person and your guide can arrange it.
