The Experience

"You ever tried to roll one yourself?" That’s how our guide, Rafael, broke the ice as we stepped into the Vivonte cigar factory just off Central Park in Puerto Plata. The place smelled like sweet tobacco and fresh coffee—sort of earthy but also kind of sharp, if that makes sense. There were a few locals chatting by the door, nodding hello as we shuffled in. I’d never thought much about cigars before this day trip, but here I was, about to get a crash course right from the source.

We started with a bit of history—Rafael told us how the Dominican cigar industry really took off after the Cuban revolution. He pointed out old photos on the wall and explained how tobacco goes from tiny seeds all the way to those thick leaves drying overhead. There was this low hum from the rolling room, and you could hear someone laughing in Spanish every so often. I tried to pay attention but kept getting distracted by the smell—like toasted bread mixed with something deeper. When it came time to actually try rolling my own cigar (let’s just say mine looked more like a lumpy breadstick), Rafael grinned and gave me a thumbs up anyway.

After that, we got to see the aging room—cooler air, stacks of wooden boxes everywhere. Rafael showed us how they check humidity and why it matters for flavor. Then he poured us each a shot of mamajuana (it’s herbal and sweet, kind of like spiced honey) and handed out cups of their mountain-roasted coffee. I’m not usually big on strong drinks before noon but…well, when in Puerto Plata, right? The whole thing felt relaxed and unhurried; nobody rushed us out or pushed sales too hard. You could tell these folks cared about their craft.

I still think about that first sip of coffee with a hint of tobacco smoke lingering in the air—oddly comforting. If you’re looking for something different than just beaches or resorts on your day trip to Puerto Plata, this cigar factory tour is worth it for the stories alone.
