The experience
San Felipe Fort sits at the heart of this tour: a 1577 stronghold where the first colonizers imprisoned independence fighters. Your guide, a local with over 15 years leading tours in Puerto Plata, walks you through the fort's history and then moves to Del Oro Chocolate Factory, where you taste chocolate at every stage: the dried seed, the butter, and the finished bars. The factory shows how cacao becomes what you eat, and you get to sample each form.
The route also takes in Paseo de Doña Blanca, a Victorian alley painted entirely pink (walls, flooring, benches, flowers) built to honor a tourism pioneer from the 18th century. It's become a backdrop for weddings and photo shoots. You'll see the Amber Museum in a Victorian house displaying Dominican amber with animal fossils inside the stones, and the Malecón, the beachfront boulevard lined with white sand beaches and restaurants where sunrises are noted as spectacular. A stop at a local restaurant offers typical Dominican dishes (chicken or beef stew, rice, beans, fried plantains) if you want to eat during the tour.
When the cable car line to Mount Isabel de Torres runs 3–4 hours long, your guide takes you to a panoramic viewpoint instead, one of the highest points in the city, where you can see the statue of Jesus, cruise ships at the port, and miles of coastline. The vehicle is air-conditioned, stocked with soda, bottled water, and alcoholic beverages. WiFi is available on board. Questions from guests are welcomed and encouraged throughout the day.
