The Experience

The boat leaves the dock at 10am or 2pm, and within the first twenty minutes you're past the noise of Pula and into the kind of water that makes you stop talking. The Coastworker holds twelve people maximum—the skipper and his wife run it themselves, which means no script, no hurrying between stops, just the two of them and whoever shows up that day. You're heading south to Cape Kamenjak, the southernmost point of Istria, where the Premantura peninsula stretches ten kilometers out into rock and cove and protected landscape that larger tour boats can't reach.

The cave is the thing people remember. You motor into it—actually inside the rock—and the water shifts color in front of you: blue on one side, green on the other, both at the same time. The skipper, who dives, knows where the sea creatures are and points them out without the usual tour-guide patter. You get snorkeling gear (mask included), time to jump from the rocks if you want to, time to feed the fish if you don't.
