The Experience
I didn’t expect the sea to be that clear around Pula — you could see straight down to the rocks even before we got in. Our guide, Marko, handed out life jackets and dry bags with a grin like he’d done this a thousand times (probably has). My paddle felt awkward at first but I got used to it quick. There was this salty tang in the air, mixed with sunscreen and the faint smell of pine trees from somewhere behind us. We set off in a line that immediately broke apart — nobody seemed to care about being neat, which was honestly kind of nice.
Marko pointed out some old stone ruins on the shore while we floated past, then led us to a spot he called the Valley of Tears. He said locals named it after some dramatic shipwreck story but I was too busy watching tiny silver fish dart under my kayak to catch every detail. When we stopped for snorkeling, the water was colder than I thought — sharp at first, then just refreshing. Someone tried to say “hvala” (thank you) for the mask and snorkel; Marko laughed and corrected them gently. The underwater world wasn’t flashy but felt alive — little crabs on rocks, seaweed waving around my ankles.
Cliff jumping sounded scarier than it actually was. Marko showed us the safe spot (not too high), and after some hesitation I just went for it — legs shaking but proud after. The splash echoed off the rocks and someone cheered from above. We lounged on a pebbly beach afterward with cold beers from Marko’s fridge bag (water too if you wanted). Sun on wet skin always feels different — warmer somehow. He snapped photos with his GoPro while we messed around; I’m not sure how ridiculous I looked mid-jump but honestly, who cares?
