The Experience
“You see that shadow?” our guide Marko grinned, tapping the bottom of his own kayak. “That’s a sea cucumber — not a snake!” I’d been squinting through the clear hull, half-expecting something dramatic. The water around Cape Kamenjak was so glassy that morning you could spot every pebble and flicker of fish. There was this salty breeze, not too strong, just enough to keep the sun from feeling harsh. We set out from the little cove with a handful of families and another couple from Zagreb — everyone a bit awkward at first, but it didn’t last long.
Paddling felt easier than I’d expected (I’m not exactly athletic), and after a few minutes my arms found their rhythm. The transparent kayak was honestly kind of trippy — like floating on air above all these darting silver fish and patches of waving seaweed. At one point Marko pointed out some old stone walls on Ceja island, telling us about fishermen who used to dry their nets there. We stopped for snacks — an apple and power bar from the lunch packet — sitting on warm rocks while kids splashed nearby. I tried snorkeling for maybe ten minutes; the mask smelled faintly rubbery but the water was cool and shockingly clear.
There were sandy spots where we could swim or just drift for a bit (I mostly drifted). A little girl kept showing me shells she’d found, holding them up with both hands like treasures. Marko took GoPro photos of us paddling past rocky bays — I’m still waiting to see if he caught my best side but honestly, who cares? The whole thing felt relaxed and unhurried, even when we had to dodge a bigger group coming in from another direction. By the time we looped back toward shore, my shoulders were tired but in that good way, you know?
