The experience
The class starts at a rural homestead where the host walks you through the day's menu: what you'll cook depends on what's growing and what the season offers. You begin by kneading your own bread using a traditional recipe, then move into the garden to see how the vegetables and herbs are grown, collect what you need for the main dish, and gather fresh eggs if the day's menu calls for them. The host speaks English or Croatian and shares stories about the family's 500-year history on the land while your food cooks.
The cooking happens in the homestead kitchen. You'll prepare dishes like a farm-grown chicken stew with fresh vegetables and homemade pasta, or a pork skewer with country-style potatoes and seasonal salad: the exact menu shifts with what's available. If dessert includes milk, you get to milk a goat. All ingredients come from the homestead garden or a local family farm, and everything is seasonal and fresh. The meal is ready for tasting when you're done cooking, served with homemade red or white wine produced on the property. If you prefer not to drink wine, homemade juice is available instead.
Pickup from Dubrovnik is included, and the whole experience takes five hours. The class welcomes vegetarians, vegans and anyone with gluten-free needs. Let the host know in advance what you eat. Homemade fruit liqueurs and brandies are available for tasting, and dried figs and homemade sweets round out the meal.
