The experience

You handle the controls the whole way. After a safety briefing on how to operate the ATV, you ride through the forest surrounding Guanacaste's beaches, where monkeys and iguanas hang in the trees above the trail. The route crosses rivers and follows back roads that no regular vehicle can navigate, so this is the only way to reach these three beaches in a single outing. Families with children can ride double ATVs instead of solo machines, so the group stays together.

The first stop is Playa Mina, where you park the ATVs right on the sand and swim along the reef in Puerto Viejo Beach's shallow water. From there the ride continues through cowboy country trails to Bahia De Los Piratos Beach at the south end of Conchal, where you can swim again before the return journey. The whole experience runs three hours from start to finish, and you should expect to get dirty. The trails are genuine off-road, not groomed paths.

Hotel pickup is included from Tamarindo, Flamingo, Playa Grande or Conchal. The guide speaks English or Spanish and travels with the group. You'll need a valid driver's license to operate an ATV, and the operator asks that you bring one if you have a spinal injury or are pregnant.
