The experience

The ride starts with a 15-minute instruction lesson on the Honda semi-automatic ATVs before anyone heads into the mountains. You'll get a helmet and goggles, and the crew walks through safety and operation until you're comfortable handling the machine. First-time ATV drivers find them straightforward to operate, and the guide stays with the group the whole way.

From there you drive up dirt roads into the mountains, then drop onto off-road trails deeper into the tropical forest. The terrain is rough enough that you should wear clothes that can get dirty and closed-toe shoes. The forest itself is where the wildlife shows up: monkeys, iguanas and other animals in the canopy above the trail. The route includes stops at lookout points with views down to Tamarindo Bay, breaking up the riding with moments to take in the landscape.

The whole outing runs about three hours. Hotel pickup covers Tamarindo, Langosta, Conchal, Grande and Flamingo. Some pickup locations outside this zone may carry an extra fee. Riders must be at least 16 years old with a valid driver's license to operate an ATV. Anyone younger rides as a passenger on a double machine with an adult. A minimum of two people per booking is required.
