The experience

You ride your own ATV, not a passenger seat, through the dry forest that covers the hills above Playa Hermosa and Coco Beach. The guide takes you on forest paths and across terrain that opens onto beaches, with a mountain lookout point over Potrero Beach built into the route. The whole thing runs 2 hours. You'll be looking for howler monkeys, eagles, tropical birds and iguanas as you go. The guide knows where to find them and where the trails go. Wear clothes you don't mind getting muddy and bring sneakers. The terrain is rough enough that you'll leave wet and sweaty.

Pickup is included from Playa Hermosa or Coco Beach hotels, though some properties charge an extra fee for the service. The guide speaks English or Spanish. A minimum of 4 people per booking is required, and you need a valid driver's license and at least a moderate level of fitness. The activity is recommended for intermediate and experienced drivers. If you're new to ATVs, this is not the place to learn. Children from age 8 can ride as passengers on an ATV with an adult driver for $15 cash.
