The Experience

The first thing I remember is the smell—sort of sweet and earthy, like wet grass after rain. We’d just hopped out of the van outside Medellin, and there was this nervous energy between us. Our guide, Camilo, grinned and handed me a helmet that still felt warm from the sun. He told me not to worry about my Spanish (I did anyway), then pointed at the ridgeline where tiny parachutes floated like lazy birds. I could hear someone laughing up there—maybe out of fear, maybe joy.

I didn’t expect how quiet it would feel once we were up. The city shrank behind us, all that honking and bustle replaced by nothing but wind in my ears and Camilo’s voice in my headset (“Look left! That’s Santa Elena!”). My hands were sweaty on the straps, but after a minute I forgot about them. You can see so much green from up high—patches of farmland, little houses tucked into folds of hills. At one point he let me steer for a second (I think he had his hands ready just in case), and I probably veered too far right because he laughed and said “Tranquilo!”

Landing was a blur—my legs wobbled more than I’d admit, but Camilo clapped me on the back and offered water like it was no big deal. There was this family watching nearby; their little girl waved at me like I’d done something heroic. On the drive back to Medellin I kept looking out the window at those same hills, thinking about how different they looked from above. It’s funny—I still get a flutter in my stomach remembering that first step off the edge.
