The Experience
The first thing I noticed as we drove out of Medellin was how the city just melts into green hills—one minute you’re passing street vendors selling arepas, the next it’s all open fields and cows. Our guide, Juan, chatted about local neighborhoods as we climbed higher. The air felt cooler up there, almost crisp compared to downtown.
At the launch site, you can hear birds and the occasional distant motorbike. The instructors were easygoing but thorough—checked our helmets, gave us a quick rundown in both Spanish and English. I was a bit nervous before takeoff, but honestly, once we lifted off with the pilot steering, it felt surprisingly peaceful. You get this wild mix of city skyline and patchwork farms below—Medellin’s contrast really hits you from above. The flight lasted around 20 minutes; enough time to spot tiny soccer games on rooftops and even a couple of stray dogs chasing each other near a farmhouse.
