The experience

The day starts with pickup from your hotel in El Poblado or Laureles and a drive of just over an hour into the mountains toward the paragliding site. Your guide walks you through insurance paperwork and keeps your belongings secure while you prepare for takeoff. A certified, experienced local pilot gives you the instructions you need, and your guide photographs you during the launch, flight and landing. The flight itself lasts around 15 minutes depending on weather, and you'll reach close to 5,000 feet: high enough to see mountains, rivers and towns spread below, with a 90-meter waterfall visible in the green landscape.

After landing, the drive to Guatapé rock takes about an hour and passes through agricultural valleys (kale, onion, sugar cane and coffee plantations), while your guide tells you the rock's history and geology. Once there, you climb 749 steps to the summit at your own pace, a walk of roughly 50 minutes up and down. At the top, you can stay as long as you want to take in views of the lake, islands and countryside. Shops sell water, beer and snacks so you can rest and absorb the vista before heading down.

The final leg is a 10- to 15-minute drive to Guatapé town, where your guide leads a narrated walk through the church, main square, remembrance street and Zocalos Square. Afterward, you're taken to a local restaurant with over 20 traditional dishes to choose from: lunch is your own expense, but the guide can recommend what to order. The tour ends with the drive back to Medellín.
