The experience
The day starts in La Candelaria at the Coffee House, where the head roaster leads a cupping session. You'll taste coffees in multiple brew methods while learning about the different processes and varieties the operation produces. This isn't a lecture. You're tasting side by side with someone who roasts daily, so the sensory work builds your palate and teaches you what to notice in a cup.
Then you travel to Finca La Esperanza, where the real work begins. You pick coffee cherries yourself, moving through the rows with the people who tend them year-round. From there you follow the processing: depulping, fermenting, drying, hulling, sorting. An expert walks you through each step, explaining why it matters and how it shapes the final flavor. It's hands-on enough that you leave understanding where Colombian specialty coffee actually comes from, not just tasting it.
Lunch is sancocho de gallina, a Colombian chicken soup with potatoes, plantain, yuca, rice and guacamole, cooked over a wood fire on the farm, or a vegetarian version with the same base vegetables and local fruits. Private transportation picks you up and brings you back, so you're not managing the logistics between the city and the finca.

Is this one for you?The 12-hour commitment means this tour takes most of your day in Bogotá, so plan it when you don't have other city stops scheduled. If you're staying near La Candelaria, the morning cupping fits before the drive out to the farm. If you're elsewhere in the city, the private pickup handles the timing.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Spanish.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Infant (1 to 3 years).
What's the difference between a cupping session and just tasting coffee?
Cupping is a structured tasting where you evaluate multiple coffees using the same method and vocabulary. The head roaster at the Coffee House guides you through it, so you learn to identify flavors and processes rather than just drinking what tastes good to you.
Do I need coffee experience to join this tour?
No. The tour is built for coffee lovers at any level, from people who drink it daily to those curious about where it comes from. The roaster and farm experts teach as they go, so beginners and experienced tasters both get something from it.
What exactly do you do at Finca La Esperanza?
You pick coffee cherries from the plants, then follow the processing steps (depulping, fermenting, drying, hulling and sorting) with the farmers and roasters who do this work. It's a working farm visit, not a museum display, so you're doing the labor and learning why each step changes the coffee.
How much of the day is travel time between Bogotá and the farm?
The full experience is 12 hours, which includes the cupping session in the city, the drive to and from Finca La Esperanza, and the time on the farm picking and processing. Private transportation is included, so you're not waiting for public transit or managing your own route.
Is lunch included, and what if I'm vegetarian?
Yes, lunch is included. The standard meal is sancocho de gallina, a traditional Colombian soup with chicken, potatoes, plantain, yuca, rice and guacamole, cooked over wood fire. A vegetarian option with the same vegetables, beans and local fruits is available.
