The experience

The tour starts at 9:30 a.m. from your Suzhou hotel or the railway station, though you can request a different time when you book. Your guide and driver pick you up and take you first to one of Suzhou's classical gardens: either the Humble Administrator's Garden, known for its limestone rockeries and ponds, or the Lingering Garden, a quieter UNESCO site with Taihu rocks and ancient pavilions. You spend the morning walking through one of these, listening to the history and architecture from your guide. If gardens aren't your only interest, you can swap this for Tiger Hill, which has a thousand-year-old leaning pagoda, or visit a silk factory in the former Japanese concession to watch the production process from silkworms to finished cloth.

After lunch (your guide recommends dishes based on what you eat), you head to your chosen water town. Zhouzhuang, known as China's number-one water town, centers on its ancient twin bridges and the 14th-century courtyard house of a Ming-era merchant named Shen Wansan. A sprawling residence that tells the story of his wealth and influence. Tongli offers Ming and Qing Dynasty streets, the UNESCO-listed Tui Si Garden, and three ring-shaped lucky bridges you can walk across. Both towns have stone bridges over canals and the kind of narrow lanes where the architecture hasn't changed in centuries. Your guide walks with you through whichever one you pick, pointing out the details and local flavors.
