If gardens are your focus, you can swap in the Lingering Garden, Master of Nets Garden or Lion Forest Garden instead.

Next comes Panmen Gate, a historic site that anchors Suzhou's oldest quarter. You'll see the 1700-year-old Buddhist pagoda and temple, walk the classic Chinese towers and the old city wall, and cross the largest stone bridge over the Grand Canal. Then the tour moves to either Pingjiang Road or Shantang old street. Both are the "Oriental Venice" part of Suzhou, where narrow waterways run alongside stone-paved streets lined with water markets, local handicrafts, street food and colorful trinkets. You can stroll and browse, or book a gondola ride to drift past the scenes while your guide points out the everyday culture.

The afternoon branches based on your time and interests. Tiger Hill holds a thousand-year-old leaning pagoda (the second-oldest of its kind, after Pisa's tower). The Suzhou Museum, designed by I.M.
